EuroMillions may have 13 participating countries, but only four of them have top 10 jackpot record winners (true to the time of writing this article). In the lead is the UK, responsible for four wins out of the top ten, as well as two of the three biggest wins of all times!

The jackpot and the secondary prizes are advertised both in Sterling Pounds and in Euros. This can sometimes cause quite a bit of confusion, as currency values constantly change. This also why the UK is so special in this regard – the UK holds the record jackpot… Both in Pounds and in Euros!

From the Pound point of view, the biggest EuroMillions jackpot was won on July 12th, 2011. Chris and Colin Weir, a married couple from Largs, Ayrshire, managed to correctly guess the numbers 17, 19, 38, 42, and 45, as well as the Lucky Numbers, 9 and 10. Those numbers netted them over £161 million. From the Euro point of view, the biggest EuroMillions jackpot was won a year later, on August 10th, 2012. EuroMillions hit its cap that very draw, bringing the jackpot to a gigantic €190 million! The lucky Adrian and Gillian Bayford, made that jackpot theirs with the numbers 11, 17, 21, 48, and 60, and the Lucky Numbers 9 and 10.

EuroMillion Top Jackpots – Is there a Pattern?

The keen eyed amongst you may have noticed that the some of the biggest jackpots won in EuroMillions both used the same Lucky Stars, 9 and 10. Are there other similarities that all the top ten winners share? Let us look at the numbers in the chart below:

EuroMillion Winning Main Numbers

At first glance, they might seem random. After all, there are 50 numbers present, so where is our pattern? We began by checking the most frequent numbers in these results. The number that appears in 7 out of the 10 top EuroMillions jackpots is the number 30. After that we have the number 46 (present four times) and the numbers 9, 28, 42 and 49, each of which is present three times. The numbers 17 and 45 each appear twice. After that, each main number appeared exactly once. Some might find it easier to see in a chart:

What about the Lucky Numbers? There is absolutely some tough competition between the numbers 9 and 10, but 9 remains the hottest Lucky Number on the block... What's even more mind-blowing is that the 9-10 combination won the gigantic jackpots four times (and 5-9 won twice, whilst 5-10 won once)! When you keep in mind that these are just the ten biggest draws out of more than 700, it's easy to comprehend just how much these numbers matter! Let's see the visual:

EuroMillions Winning Days and Months

Timing is everything. Glancing over at the dates in which the top ten jackpots were won, it's very easy to see just that. The 13th of the month was responsible for three of the biggest EuroMillions jackpots in history. That is a significant amount of times, even for a lottery that draws twice a week! Seven out of the ten jackpots were also won in the first half of the month!

The one that seemed to matter most, however, was the season. Only one of the ten top EuroMillions jackpots of all time was won in the winter, 2 were won in spring, 3 in the summer and 4 in the autumn!

How Come the EuroMillions Doesn't Exceed the €190 Million Mark?

EuroMillions did not always have a jackpot cap. When the pan-European lottery just launched in 2004, the rollovers were limited to 12 times. If no one could snag the jackpot by then, the prize was evenly distributed between the winners of the next prize category. This changed in November 2009, when the rollover rule was replaced by a jackpot cap of €185 million. Once the jackpot hit that number, the cap would increase by another €5 million. It took almost two years before the cap was reached and won by the Weirs, after which the official number was permanently raised to €190 million. It was only a year before that cap was reached as well.

This means that a €190 million jackpot not only can, but does get won! The current rules permit the cap to rollover once. If no winner is won after that rollover, the jackpot will roll down and be equally divided among the second prize category winners, who only need to match five main numbers and a single Lucky Star. If there are none, it will be shared amongst the third prize category winners, who only need to correctly guess the five main numbers, and so on.
