Top 5 Biggest EuroMillions Jackpot Wins

Today, EuroMillions jackpots can reach unprecedented heights thanks to a 2020 rule change that put it on the record-breaking map! So who are the lucky players who snagged the biggest EuroMillions jackpots? How much did they win? Discover all the details of the five biggest EuroMillions jackpots awarded since the lottery's inception in 2004.

1st Place: United Kingdom

Three records were broken with this EuroMillions jackpot win! On 19 July 2022, an unprecedented €230 million jackpot prize was won by a single UK ticketholder after a boosted Superdraw jackpot had a series of rollovers and reached the lottery’s cap. The lucky winner(s) correctly guessed the seven winning numbers, which were 6, 23, 27, 40, 41 and the Lucky Star numbers 2 and 12.

The National Lottery stated that this is the largest lottery prize they’ve ever awarded to a UK player and it’s the second Superdraw jackpot won in 2022 by a UK ticket. The big win also took the title of the biggest EuroMillions and European jackpot.

2nd Place: France

15 October 2021 marked a new record in the EuroMillions and European lottery world! This incredible €220 million jackpot had been won by a young woman from French Polynesia just six rollovers after the Superdraw series started. It is not only the biggest jackpot ever won in France, but also the biggest EuroMillions prize ever won (for now!). The draw's winning numbers were: 21, 26, 31, 34, 49 and Lucky Stars 2 and 5.

This event also meant that the next EuroMillions jackpot would be capped at €230 million!

3rd Place: United Kingdom

On 10 May 2022, a single ticket won the entire €215.8 million EuroMillions jackpot, after UK couple Joe and Jess Thwait correctly guessed the winning numbers: 3, 25, 27, 28, 29 - plus the Lucky Star numbers 4 and 9. That made them the second UK EuroMillions of 2022, but the biggest ever UK lottery winners in history!

Surprisingly enough, this huge jackpot was won in an ordinary EuroMillions draw and not as part of a Superdraw series.

4th Place: Switzerland

Under the EuroMillions jackpot cap rules set in February 2020, before reaching the €220 million mark, the EuroMillions maximum jackpot was set at €210 million. The first EuroMillions Superdraw of 2021 changed that!

After the boosted jackpot rolled over several times without a winner, the entire €210 million was finally scooped up by a single Swiss player in the 26 February 2021 draw less than three months after the previous jackpot cap was reached by a lucky French ticket holder.

5th Place: France

While it might not have been the biggest EuroMillions jackpot to ever be awarded, the 11 December 2020 draw stands out for several reasons!

Besides awarding a record-breaking €200 million jackpot to a single winner from France, this was the first time that EuroMillions’ previous jackpot cap of €190 million was exceeded after a rule change made less than a year earlier.

This draw also marked the 110th EuroMillions jackpot won in France and the 500th jackpot won from all participating countries combined since the launch of the EuroMillions lottery in 2004.

EuroMillions Jackpot – €190 Million

As we have already mentioned, for many years the EuroMillions jackpot was capped at €190 million, which is why we ranked several winners in fifth place. Learn more about the EuroMillions jackpot cap!

Before being increased, the last time the €190 million jackpot cap was reached was in October 2019. The lucky winner from the United Kingdom, who preferred to remain anonymous, quickly contacted the national lottery in order to recover his incredible prize of 170 million pounds sterling! To date, this is the largest lottery prize ever won by a UK player!

A Spanish winner from Las Palmas instantly became a multi-millionaire following the 6 October  2017 draw - a date he will certainly never forget!

It was the third time since the creation of the pan-European lottery that the jackpot had reached the €190 million cap. The boosted Superdraw jackpot that started it all reached the cap on 3 October 2017. It then took just one more draw for the jackpot to fall into the lucky winner’s lap, allowing non-jackpot winners to reap excess prizes winnings!

On 24 October 2014, an anonymous winner from Castelo Branco, Portugal took home an exceptional jackpot of €190 million! The winning ticket was sold after a Superdraw jackpot rolled over six times.

With slow growth and recent figures setting the unemployment rate at 13.4%, Portugal was one of the eurozone countries most affected by the crisis. While the winner will no longer have to worry about financial hardship, the local 20% tax on their prize money may have put a damper on the big win!

Finally, let us mention the infamous English couple, Adrian and Gillian Bayford, who won the incredible sum of €190 million in the 10 August 2012 EuroMillions draw. As UK lottery winnings are tax-exempt, the Bayfords are ahead of the anonymous Portuguese player cited above.

Unfortunately, all’s well did not end well for the Bayfords, as the couple confessed they were in trouble even before the win and the pressure of this newfound fame and wealth drove them to divorce. The main problem lay in revealing their identities to the public, as being rich with celebrity status meant that the couple were excessively solicited. The saying "To live happily, live hidden" is something big lottery winners should definitely take to heart!

Stay tuned for the next EuroMillions Superdraw for a chance at getting your name on this big winners' list! You can also play EuroMillions each week for jackpot prizes that can eventually grow to be just as big and life-changing as a Superdraw prize.
