Shining a Spotlight on the U.S. Powerball Lottery

The US Powerball Lottery is a mega-jackpot draw that attracts crowds from all corners of the world. Want to know why? Read all about it – the clock is ticking!

The U.S. Powerball lottery, initially conceived in 1988 for US states that did not sell the Mega Millions lottery, has grown to become the most popular lottery draw in North America, featuring some of the heftiest jackpots in the world (rivaled only by the U.S. Mega Millions). This lottery giant has become so favourable amongst lottery fans that countries like the UK, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa have all launched their own local versions of it.

U.S. Powerball Explained

So what sets this lottery apart from other renowned formats? Well, at its core, it is still a lottery draw like many others – select a series of five balls with numbers ranging 1 to 59, and an additional number (the Powerball) from a guess range of 1 to 35 – but there’s a twist to it in the form of an optional prize multiplier, called Power Play, which doubles, triples or quadruples secondary prizes. Another stimulating feature would be the 8-figure $40 million starting jackpot, which is not a bad way to attract a crowd with a taste for epic winnings.

Lottery Records Are Meant to Be Broken

On 18th May 2013, the U.S. Powerball set a new personal record by hitting a jackpot of $590.5 million, second only to the U.S. Mega Millions record jackpot of $656 million set in March 2012. Not only did this add $2.5 million to Powerball’s existing personal best, it was also a milestone in lottery history as Gloria MacKenzie, an 84-year-old grandmother from Florida, claimed the staggering lump sum prize of $370 million – the greatest single ticket win of all time!
