German Lotto History

The Deutscher Lotto-und Totoblock (DLTB) created the Germany Lotto in 1974, and it continues as Germany’s most popular lottery today. The lottery is run by consortium of German lotteries that preside over different regions of the country or specific lottery formats. Each organization governs the DLTB for three-year periods. LOTTO 6aus49’s record jackpot, €45.4 million, was won in 2007.

In 2009, the lottery set a cap on the number of jackpot rollovers it would allow. If the Germany Lotto jackpot has not been won in 12 consecutive draws, the next draw will be staged with a must-be-won jackpot. If in that draw there are also no tickets that match the six main numbers and the additional Super Number drawn, the jackpot prize will be distributed to winning tickets in the next highest prize division.

In 2013, Germany Lotto introduced two rule changes. First, the bonus number changed  into a player-selected additional number called the "Super Number". As for the second rule change, the lottery introduced a ninth prize category giving players another way chance of winning! Players need to match just two regular numbers plus the Super Number and they've won a prize when playing the LOTTO 6 aus 49 lottery.

In August 2020, German Lotto introduced a €45 million cap on the jackpot prize. When the cap is reached, a must-be-won draw is staged. If in that draw there are still no tickets that match the six main numbers and the additional Super Number, the entire prize amount is split amongst the winners of the next highest prize division.
