The Mysterious New Portuguese EuroMillions Millionaire

26 Oct 2014

It has now been two days since the EuroMillions draw of the year and the identity of the jackpot winner still remains a mystery. What we do know is that the €190 million prize was won by just one ticket, and that this winning ticket was sold in Portugal! The much-awaited draw on Friday, October 24th did not disappoint, and we now we have a brand-new EuroMillions multi-millionaire, as well as many second-division millionaires!

The Mysterious New Portuguese EuroMillions Millionaire

Is the winner male or female? Does the ticket belong to a single person, a couple or to a syndicate? These are questions that have yet to be answered, but the fact remains that someone went out and bought a EuroMillions lottery ticket in Portugal, and that ticket is now worth €190 million!

Where was the Winning EuroMillions Ticket Bought?

We know more about the winning ticket itself that we do about its owner (or owners). This EuroMillions ticket was bought in the Portuguese district of Castelo Branco at the Sobedis store in the Alegro shopping center. The store has been selling lottery tickets for 15 years, but this is the first time that it has ever sold a EuroMillions jackpot ticket. The ticket was registered through the official lottery operator, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.

What we also know about the winning ticket is, of course, that its numbers were 3, 9, 20, 30, and 42 and Lucky Stars 1 and 6 – an exact match for the lottery numbers drawn on Friday!

Portugal is a EuroMillions Success Story

Statistically, Portugal has the third largest share of EuroMillion jackpot winners, falling behind only France and Spain. Prior to this win, the country had 52 first-division winners, but none of these were top 10 jackpot record winners. Now, the 53rd EuroMillions jackpot winner from Portugal ranks right at the top!

This is now the second time in the history of EuroMillions that a €190 million jackpot cap has been won. The first time that this happened was in 2012 when U.K. couple Adrian and Gillian Bayford hit the jackpot. But, for the moment, we have yet to unravel the mystery of who won the capped jackpot this time around.

Extra Cash for Second-Division EuroMillions Winners

There were nine lucky second-division prize winners who each won €2.1 million by matching 5 numbers plus 1 Lucky Star. True to the jackpot cap rules, the extra funds generated by lottery ticket sales were distributed amongst the second-division prizes instead of into the main jackpot, as is usually the case. This means extra winnings for these lucky nine winners!
