Winner of $228 million jackpot announced in California
Last Thursday, life dramatically changed for Northern California resident Vinh Nguyen. Working as a nail technician in a San Mateo shopping center, the lucky winner had bought 15 tickets ahead of Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. Spending a mere $30, Nguyen was the sole winner of the enormous $228.4 million jackpot. Playing the lottery for five years now, the lucky winner decides how many tickets he purchases that week, depending on how good his tips have been. Choosing the numbers off the top of his head, Nguyen won with the numbers 7, 14, 21, 24, 41 and the Powerball number of 26.
Waiting for the dust to settle around their most popular employee, Nguyen’s nail salon has remained closed since the news of the win broke, with Nguyen himself staying close to home and declining a press conference. “I read the numbers; I didn’t think I had won”, exclaimed the shocked winner. Though still unsure how he will spend his massive win, he has decided to not take the lump-sum, but rather opt for the annuity payments, which will begin with $3 million after taxes, this year, and continue for the next 30 years.
Key Markets, located across the road from Nguyen’s nail salon, will receive $1 million for selling the winning ticket. This win is the third biggest Powerball jackpot to be claimed this year, and the second for California. In February, B. Raymond Buxton won $425 million.
