A retired firefighter from the New York borough of Queens, who narrowly escaped the fate of many of his colleagues on that dark day on September 11th, 2001, has just won a €5 million US lottery prize.
63-year-old Carlos Mercado went to claim his $5 million prize on July 2nd. The former fireman was stunned.
On that fateful day on September 11, 2001, Mercado’s Queens Battalion 49 responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He subsequently had to retire from active duty due to his suffering from respiratory disease and he has since been living on benefits under the James Zadroga health programme, which is specifically designated to benefit police officers and firefighters who suffer from illnesses related to the attack on the World Trade Center.
When Mercado realised that he’d struck gold in the Cash X100 scratch game, he could not sleep for two days.
Mercado now intends to splash out on a home at Florida's Disney World – the place where his family holidays most years. His daughter can look forward to several American Girl dolls and Santa’s promised to be extra generous this year, too.
