North Carolina single mother claims a third of last week’s $564 million Powerball jackpot!
One week ago, Marie Holmes was a struggling single mother of four kids. Today, she is a millionaire, many times over. Makes that 188 times over, to be exact.
On February 11th, an almost historically high jackpot of $564 million – over half a billion dollars! – was won by three lucky tickets holders. One hailed from Texas, another from Puerto Rico, and the third was Marie Holmes from Shallotte, North Carolina. Speaking to TV reporters over the weekend, the surprisingly calm unemployed mother told of her gratefulness for winning such an amount.
“I’m just thankful that I can actually do for them without anybody’s help. I don’t have to worry about struggling anymore”, she happily exclaimed. Being a single mother of four young kids, including one who suffers from cerebral palsy, Ms. Holmes is just thankful for being able to now provide for her kids for the rest of their lives.
The biggest choice that this lucky winner will have to make is whether to take $188 million over the next 30 years, or the lump sum of $127 million, before taxes. Marie has already mentioned that she plans to give a sizeable amount to charity, having God to thank for her unbelievable luck. The winning numbers in that fateful draw were 11, 13, 25, 39 and 54, with a Powerball number of 19. The next biggest jackpot in the US is the Mega Millions, where the amount for the taking currently stands at an impressive $88 million. Play Mega Millions online for your shot at the jackpot!
