Record-Breaking EuroMillions Winners Share Their Wealth – July 13th, 2012

The couple who scooped the largest-ever EuroMillions lottery jackpot are still sharing their wealth a full year after their luck came in.

This week, Christine and Colin Weir have been celebrating the anniversary of their lotto win, a £161 million fortune they landed when their numbers matched those announced in the EuroMillions results draw on July 12th 2011.

Since then, the couple – who live in the Scottish marina town of Largs- have made regular appearances in the headlines, as the intrigue surrounding how they are choosing to spend their riches permeated the global lottery community.

In the past 12 months, the Weirs have been open about how they have used their money and have made it quite clear they are happy for the world to know just how big-hearted they are with their millions of Pounds.

Mr Weir – a retired television cameraman – and his former nurse wife have given generously to the Scottish National Party’s independence campaign, donating £1 million to the cause which aims to make Scotland a country in its own right and separate from the rest of the UK.

Furthermore, they have used their wealth to rescue the Waverley steam boat from being decommissioned and to shower their friends and family with gifts.

Speaking to the BBC about the anniversary of their lottery win, the couple said they feel privileged to be in a position to help the causes they support.

“It has been quite a year, exciting and challenging in equal measure, but we couldn’t be happier,” Mr Weir commented.

“The biggest change in our life is that we can now support causes close to our hearts in a more meaningful way. It is a privilege to be in a position to see a situation where help is needed and be able to do something about it,” he remarked.

Recent donations the couple have made include funding a young sporting hopeful’s Spanish tennis academy placement and sponsoring a teenage race driver to attend the European Italian F3 European Abarth.

They have also given money to the National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde refurbishment project and the revamping of the Largs Thistle Community Club.

The next EuroMillions draw is tonight – so fans can enter today on theLotter and think about all the good causes they would support if their luck came in.
