After weeks of waiting in anticipation – during which time countless lotto fans must have been frantically checking their own lottery tickets – the winner of the coveted $206 million USA Mega Millions jackpot has come forward.
The now fantastically wealthy player has so far elected to remain anonymous and only made an appearance at the New York State Lottery headquarters this week, despite the drawing for this enormous top prize taking place on December 27th.
Very little is known about the man or woman who bought the ticket, except for the fact that they live inLong Islandand are now the richest-ever lotto winner to come from that part of the state.
According to New York State Lottery officials, the slip was purchased at a supermarket in the Middle Island area and the numbers were chosen by a Quick Pick random number selector.
Because the winner had taken so long to make themselves known to officials, it was rumoured the lucky lotto fan was in fact an employee of the store in question.
If the lottery player chooses to take his or her payout as a cash lump sum, the amount they receive will be worth $153 million.
It is not known whether they kept their momentous USA Mega Millions win under their hat because they wanted to get used to the idea of owning such an enormous sum of money and contact the necessary financial and legal experts to advise them on the best steps to take, or if it was merely the case that they did not check their lottery ticket until recently.
Last week, the media was rife with reports about the mystery lottery winner who was yet to make themselves known – coverage that may have encouraged the player to take a peek at any slips they had forgotten to check.
The USA Mega Millions jackpot has been rolling over since the exciting December 27th draw, with four unclaimed top prizes seeing the payout climb to dizzying heights once again.
Its jackpot is now $42 million and lottery fans can enter their lucky numbers or Quick Pick selection in time for tomorrow’s (January 13th) draw.

A 60-year-old woman from Portlandin Oregonhas been targeted by a fraudster who called numerous times to tell her she had won the Mega Millions Giveaway.
Linda McDonald revealed that the man – who claimed to be somebody called Jon Farrell – told her she was the lucky winner of the prize, but in order to collect it she had to pay him $425 which would be picked up from her home by “a representative” for tax reasons.
In addition to saying she had won a cash sum, the con artist added that the woman had also landed a new vehicle and free fuel for the car for a year.
Furthermore, the total sum the victim had supposedly scooped changed, with amounts varying from $50,000 to $1.25 million.
The bogus caller claimed the giveaway was a scheme organised by Wal-Mart and other chain stores, but when Ms McDonald rang the supermarket to check this detail, it was revealed she was not the first to have been scammed in such a way.
Lottery fans who enjoy playing USA Mega Millions should not panic about this, because the police are working on the case and have revealed the numbers used to make the calls are already under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and Nigerian law enforcement.
One way lottery players can make sure they are not being reeled into fake schemes such as this is by purchasing their USA Mega Millions and other lottery tickets online at theLotter – because then if a fraudster tells them they have won a prize for buying their ticket at a certain store, they will know this is not true.
Fortunately, Ms McDonald – who is a cancer sufferer and lives on a fixed income – kept her suspicions at the front of her mind and did not give the criminals any money.
Since reporting her ordeal to the police, it has been revealed several households have been contacted in the Portland area and the rest of Oregon with the caller peddling the same bogus story.
Sergeant Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau told KGW News: “These people are very vicious on the phone and will threaten victims’ lives … if the caller does not cave in to the unrelenting phone calls.”

Following on from our guide to what some European lotto names mean, lottery fans may be left scratching their heads over what led to the names of some USA draws.
Indeed, there is much more to some of the names of these lottos than meets the eye in many cases and knowing why they have been called what they have been called could help players get a better understanding of what these draws are all about and what makes them special.
Powerball
The USA Powerball began life in 1988 as Lotto America and changed its name to Powerball in 1992.
It was the first game to use the two-drum matrix system allowing for high odds for top-tier prizes and low odds for smaller payouts. This second drum draws the Power Ball, the additional number than gives players the ‘power to win the jackpot’.
The Power Ball is chosen from this second drum and its number is filled in by the player in a different grid on the ticket from the main range of numbers. The system proved so successful that it has been adopted by many massive lottos including the Mega Millions and EuroMillions.
Mega Millions
Just like the USA Powerball, USA Mega Millions started life as a completely different draw.
The Big Game was founded in 2000, when multi-state games were growing in popularity, and then became the Big Game Mega Millions. By May 2002, the nine states of New York, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, Massachusetts and Virginia were all playing this draw and that was when the name was shortened to Mega Millions – with these states to welcome Washington, California and Texas into the group in the years to come.
Because millions of people are able to play the game, it means jackpots can roll over to higher sums more quickly – hence the name Mega Millions.
Hoosier Lottery
The USA Hoosier Lotto has – to those who do not live in its home state of Indiana – perhaps one of the more peculiar names of all the USA draws.
Indeed, the term Hoosier is another word for a resident of Indiana, which adopted the nickname of Hoosier State more than 150 years ago.
But what is a hoosier? According to Indiana University, the word was once a derogatory term to denote a roughneck or somebody who lived out in the sticks, but has since become an affectionate nickname.
So what better to call the state lotto of Indiana, especially as Indianans elected the name of the Hoosier Lotto to replace the original Lotto Cash name given to the draw back in 1994.

Lottery fans and the press are clamouring for the player with the winning numbers for the Mega Millions draw on December 27th to step forward – because they are now entitled to a huge $206 million fortune.
Very little is known about who this new multi-millionaire is, but it is believed they are a resident of Long Island, New York.
Perhaps the winner is getting used to the idea of having such a life-changing sum of money appear unexpectedly like this, because so far officials at the New York Lottery have not yet heard anything from anybody claiming to own the golden ticket.
Spokesman Alex Traverso told the Appeal Democrat that it is not unusual for those who win enormous jackpots to wait a few days or weeks before coming forward to collect their payout.
He said that not enough time has elapsed since the draw to be concerned that the lottery ticket has gone unnoticed in a handbag or jeans pocket.
“When it goes a month or two months, then you think maybe the person misplaced their ticket,” Mr Traverso added.
The lottery official revealed that recently a man had routinely gone into a local shop to buy his tickets for that week and check the previous few draw’s numbers when he realised he had scooped a six-figure sum playing the lotto.
He suggested this latest USAMega Millions champion may also have a similar habit, hence the delay.
In addition to the top prize, there were five lotto players who won the second prize by matching five correct regular numbers but missing out on the Mega Ball.
This mean five lucky people in Los Angeles and Tustin have started the new year $250,000 richer.
Fans of the USA Mega Millions – or those who would like to try a new lottery to ring in the start of 2012 – may want to try their luck at theLotter where they can enter the lotto online, check results and learn more about their favourite games.
The next USA Mega Millions draw is tomorrow (January 6th) and players who enter could be in with a chance of winning a jackpot worth $25 million.

A fast food worker from Dawsonville, Georgia, has won $250,000 thanks to a USA Mega Millions ticket that had been tossed in the rubbish bin.
According to Opposing Views, Andrew Hunter, who works at a local branch of Taco Bell, rescued the discarded slip and upon unfurling it realized he had scooped $3, because one of the lines matched one number plus the Mega Ball.
With this small windfall, the 24-year-old then purchased more lottery tickets – one of which resulted in a $250,000 payout.
He remarked: “I would have never bought that ticket if I hadn’t pulled the other ticket out of the trash.
“I don’t think it’s really hit me yet.”
Lottery fans who do not know where to buy MegaMillion lottery tickets can enter the draw at theLotter to be in with a chance of winning one of the cash prizes on offer.

In this second edition in our new series of understanding lotto terms, we want to help lottery fans boost their game by understanding what it means to choose the multiplier option.
Many lotto fans may have spotted the Megaplier when they play USA Mega Millions - this is what is known in the lottery world as a multiplier.
It is simply a way of multiplying a non-jackpot lottery prize for an additional charge.
Non-jackpot prizes are multiplied by the Megaplier number – 2, 3 or 4 – which means lotto fans can get a lot more bang for their buck if their lucky numbers come through.
In the USA Mega Millions draw, the match 5 prize – which is always $250,000 – is always multiplies by Megaplier number 4, instantly making the ticketholder a millionaire.
USA Powerball works in a similar play with its own Power Play option, which boosts a player’s non-jackpot winnings by multiplying it with the Power Play ball and entitles match 5 prize-winners to a $1 million payout, just by ticking a box.
The USA Oregon Megabucks also has a multiplier entitled the Kicker, which entitles any non-jackpot prize won in the game to be multiplied by four.
There’s no time like the present for lottery enthusiasts to give these optional extras a go to boost their winnings, with the next USA Powerball and Oregon Megabucks draws taking place today (November 16th) and the next USA Mega Millions game scheduled for Friday (November 18th).

Lottery fans may be fizzling with excitement about the USA Mega Millions draw tomorrow (November 8th), because the top prize has jumped to an impressive $15 million.
Likely as not, the majority of lotto lovers will already have a mental shopping list for all the wonderful things they will be able to buy with their winnings when lady luck calls in one of these days, but for those who would not know where to start, the lottery has come up with some ideas.
New York residents could – if their appetite was big enough – guzzle more than four million hot dogs from Nathan’s at Coney Island, or even buy one prime season ticket for the New York Yankees and another for the New York Mets for each of the next 1,374 baseball seasons.
Lotto fans from Michigan who have a sweet tooth could sink a ship with 1.9 million pounds of Mackinac Island fudge, or take 7,000 of their closest friends on a six-day cruise on Lake Michigan.
Enterprising lottery winners might want to use their $15 million USA Mega Millions jackpot to pan for gold in Dahlonega, Georgia, where they could hunt for the precious metal two million times at the home of the first American gold rush.
For some, dining out on a seafood dinner is what makes a special occasion and in Maryland a lucky lotto player could chow down on 2.4 million steamed crabs, or they may prefer splashing out on 300,000 club-level tickets to the Baltimore Orioles games.
California is already home to a glut of fabulously wealthy individuals, so there is plenty there for a lotto winner to do with a fistful of cash, including attending 13,047 weeks of summer surf camp near San Diego or buying a five-bedroom and eight-bath 6,000 sq ft mansion in Beverly Hills.
If any of this sounds like fun then lottery fans should make sure they have their lucky numbers ready for the next USA Mega Millions draw to be in with a chance of scooping the $15 million jackpot.

In the eighth season of the US version of the popular show, the warehouse staff strike lucky and leave their jobs, while the characters who work upstairs are left fantasising about what they would do with a juicy lottery payout.
Funnyman Jim claims he would move Pam and their children to Maine, while his other half ruminates that she would prefer the New York district of SoHo because she would be able to have fancy coffee every morning.
Kelly, however, states she would stay in her role at Dunder Mifflin for a $1-a-day salary but would do no work and former warehouse worker Darryl is left devastated as he is not entitled to any of the winnings since he changed jobs.

After making a transfer of $20.9 million on June 17th, the organisation’s contributions passed the $4 billion mark, exceeding its annual proceeds goal in the 2011 financial year.
In all, it handed over $259.4 million – $4.3 million more than in 2010.
Executive director of the company May Scheve Reardon put this down to the fact that the lottery has become “much more visible” in the last 12 months, thanks to traditional marketing strategies and sponsoring sports teams such as the St Louis Cardinals.
“This year our goal was to raise $259 million for public education and we are proud to say we not only met but exceeded that goal by nearly a half a million dollars,” she remarked.
Lotto players have also benefited from the Missouri Lottery. In May, the business awarded over $9.4 million in prizes, with one person claiming a $250,000 Mega Millions prize.

A retired couple from Hayden in Idaho have won $1 million in the USA Mega Millions draw, driving eight hours from their home to the lottery headquarters to pick up their cheque.
Clifford and Helena Jordan – who met when they were in high school and have been married for 50 years – are the third $1 million or higher lottery winners this year who hail from northern Idaho.
Ms Jordan said she had heard friends discussing the big lotto win and how the lucky player was from the region. “You just think it’s never going to be you. But it was,” she remarked.
“Life’s going to be so much better now,” Ms Jordan went on to say, while her husband noted that they intend to make their prize pot last.
Their lotto win continues the state’s lucky streak – in the last 15 months, eastern Idaho has seen six USA Powerball winners take home at least $200,000.

A group of millionaires who made their cash playing games like the USA Mega Millions and the USA Powerball have helped give a little back this month.
The 34-strong team, taking part in the 25th Millionaires Reunion, worked alongside volunteers from the Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility and Wonders of Wildlife to help 200 students at McGregor Elementary School’s summer school scheme in Missouri.
During the event, pupils made animal tracks, frog masks and pine cone bird feeders, as well as visiting five wildlife stations to see reptiles, birds of prey and amphibians.
“It is beneficial for young students to learn firsthand by experiencing and interacting with animals. This experience will probably be one of the highlights of their summer school education,” Dr Ben Hackenwerth – Springfield Public Schools’ executive director of elementary facilities – remarked.
Similarly, Jeff and Billy Wilson of North Carolina recently set up a foundation to help those in need, the Shelby Star reported.
The lottery winners donated money to help a sick boy with medical bills and also paid for alcohol monitoring devices in Mecklenburg County.

A lottery-winning couple’s dream has come true – not only did they hit the big time with a $266 million US Mega Millions jackpot, but they were invited to chat about their windfall on Oprah.
Jacki and Gilbert Cisneros from Pico Rivera in California went on the chat show to discuss their win with the famous host, the OC Register reports.
Ms Cisneros – an apparent Oprah obsessive who had always wanted to get a ticket for the show – even said she thought it was a bigger deal to sit on that stage with Oprah herself than actually winning all that lottery cash.
“We got to be on Oprah,” she remarked. “That’s huge.”
“It was a great experience, everything about it. I loved it. I wish I could go back for one more show,” Ms Cisneros went on to say.
The couple themselves have proved to be generous with their lottery cash as well – earlier this month, it emerged that they had donated $1.25 million to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to help 50 students make their way through high school.

The balls that dropped during the draw were 3, 33, 39, 47 and 53, with the Powerball of 9.
Discussing the moment he found out he had won, Mr Warren noted that “my legs just turned to water and I hit the desk”.

A couple who hit the big time on the US Mega Millions lottery, winning $266 million, have donated some of their windfall to an education campaign.
Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros of Pico Rivera in California gave $1.25 million to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to help launch the Generation 1st Degree Pico Rivera, a scheme that will see 50 scholarships set up at El Rancho High School.
Each bursary will provide eligible students with $2,500 from 2012, while the money will also be used to fund community outreach programmes to encourage higher education.
Ms Cisneros noted that she and her husband had been “incredibly blessed” with the lottery win and had always said they wanted to give something back.
“The people of Pico Rivera mean so much to us and we believe helping more young people go to and graduate from college can make a real difference,” she remarked.
The estimated jackpot for the next US Mega Millions game – to take place on May 20th – is $16 million.

After winning $250,000 on the USA Mega Millions lottery, a couple from Mattoon in Illinois have decided to build their own dream home.
According to the Illinois Lottery, Joe and Anieta Trame have spent years discussing and planning for a new residence, intending to construct a master bedroom on the first floor instead of on the second, a large basement and a three-vehicle garage.

Two Mega Millions winners who both scooped $250,000 now have 12 months to collect their prizes following the draw on April 29th.
All five white balls – 9, 10, 11, 33 and 51 – were correctly matched on both tickets, although the players didn’t select the yellow Mega Ball of 29.
Each lucky winner is now being encouraged by Pennsylvania Lottery to sign the backs of their tickets and file their claims at the company’s headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County.
On April 27th, Pennsylvania Lottery reminded players that two tickets – one worth $200,000 from the May 12th 2010 draw and another worth $50,000 from the May 11th game – are about to expire.
Interim executive director Drew Svitko said: “One of our players could have a big winning ticket sitting on a desk, stashed in a closet or tucked into a coat pocket and not even know it.”

Players of the Wisconsin Lottery appear to be unconcerned with collecting their cash, as the organisation has just revealed that over a period of 13 years, $44,852,936 has gone unclaimed, a figure that also doesn’t take into account scratch-card winnings that haven’t been picked up.
Spokesman for the group Andrew Bohage noted that it is expected unclaimed winnings will climb by approximately $3 million every year, stating that there are many people out there who don’t know there are mid-level amounts of cash outside the big jackpots, the Post-Crescent reports.
While some big tickets go apparently unwanted – such as a $1 million Powerball Power Play ticket that wasn’t collected within the 180-day timeframe – Mr Bohage explained that the majority of prizes that suffer this fate are the smaller ones.
January however saw Karmen Antilla of De Pere win $250,000 in the Mega Millions jackpot draw, receiving $168,125 after taxes.

For 15 consecutive draws no Mega Millions players lottery numbers made the cut. Finally, this past Friday night, one player from Albany, New York struck gold. The winning ticket for the lottery jackpot worth $319,000,000 was sold at Coulson’s News Center, which has been selling newspapers, magazines, sodas and snacks for more than 70 years. The employees couldn’t be more proud that the quick-pick ticket came from their shop.

Players across the world are rushing to buy their USA Mega Millions tickets in preparation for tonight’s lottery drawing. The Mega Millions lottery drawing on this past Friday night had, yet again, no jackpot winner and the massive jackpot keeps on growing.
I don’t know if you have been following this staggering jackpot, so we’ll fill you in on a few of the surrounding facts and figures. As we said the other day, the jackpot began accumulating on February 4, 2011. It started with a first draw jackpot of $12 million and today, 13 consecutive draws later, has grown to an unbelievable amount of about $244,000,000 and over $43 million more than the previous week’s drawing.
The cash take home value for the$244 million jackpot is $128.3 million. Not too shabby. It should also be noted that both the quoted jackpot, and take home cash, amount for tonight’s drawing are just estimated figures from the official lottery. The actual amounts will most likely be higher by tonight’s drawing
Unlimited tickets for the USA Mega Millions lottery can be purchased on theLotter.com for tonight’s 3/22/11 – 11:00 EST drawing.
