A 58-year-old war veteran in desperate need of a kidney transplant had his prayers answered after he realised he had landed a $14.3 million fortune playing Wisconsin Megabucks.
Napoleon Elvord, ofMadisonin the north-central state, had been on dialysis for five years and was enduring worsening health conditions when his luck came in.

However, the semi-retired construction worker and former military man did not realise he had the key to a lifetime of extraordinary wealth just sitting on his kitchen table.
For three days after the winning numbers were announced on January 14th, Mr Elvord ignored his lottery ticket because he thought he had entered the USA Powerball, not the Wisconsin Megabucks.
It was only when he went back to the store where he purchased the lottery ticket that the staff asked him if he was the winner – because word had spread that aMadison player was the fortunate lotto fan that week.
Mr Elvord was unconvinced, but checked his slip anyway.
The lotto fan then took the lottery ticket to officials to inspect for him, but his attitude was so dubious, they suspected he had forged it before confirming he had indeed won $14.3 million – a sum that will change his life enormously.
Mr Elvord has now come to terms with the fact he is a very rich man and told NBC 15 inMadison: “I hadn’t really made any plans yet, but I do look at the economy and think about the people that have lost homes that had homes and had jobs.”
“I’m into construction. I like remodeling, fixing up things and I’m looking at possibly doing something in that area to re-sell homes and bring people back into their housing area,” he added.
As well as doing good for the community, Mr Elvord will be putting some of his winnings towards a comprehensive health insurance package and enjoying some time of convalescence.
He admitted he would like to retire to his nativeTexasand live a leisurely life after years of working in construction and for the army.

In this second edition in our new series of understanding lotto terms, we want to help lottery fans boost their game by understanding what it means to choose the multiplier option.
Many lotto fans may have spotted the Megaplier when they play USA Mega Millions - this is what is known in the lottery world as a multiplier.
It is simply a way of multiplying a non-jackpot lottery prize for an additional charge.
Non-jackpot prizes are multiplied by the Megaplier number – 2, 3 or 4 – which means lotto fans can get a lot more bang for their buck if their lucky numbers come through.
In the USA Mega Millions draw, the match 5 prize – which is always $250,000 – is always multiplies by Megaplier number 4, instantly making the ticketholder a millionaire.
USA Powerball works in a similar play with its own Power Play option, which boosts a player’s non-jackpot winnings by multiplying it with the Power Play ball and entitles match 5 prize-winners to a $1 million payout, just by ticking a box.
The USA Oregon Megabucks also has a multiplier entitled the Kicker, which entitles any non-jackpot prize won in the game to be multiplied by four.
There’s no time like the present for lottery enthusiasts to give these optional extras a go to boost their winnings, with the next USA Powerball and Oregon Megabucks draws taking place today (November 16th) and the next USA Mega Millions game scheduled for Friday (November 18th).

California now has one more millionaire after a lottery player from Los Angeles scooped a whopping $56.5 million playing USA Mega Millions.
The lucky lotto fan won the jackpot on Saturday (October 1st) and will share his or her payout with another fortunate person from North Carolina who also matched all six numbers – splitting the $113 million prize in two.
Saturday’s (October 1st) draw was the first time since June that the USA Mega Millions first tier sum surpassed the $100 million mark.
So far the prize winner has not made themselves known to lottery officials, but lotto chiefs have reminded the lucky ticket holder to sign the back of their slip, put it in a safe place and get in touch as soon as possible.
Lotto fans who are inspired by this enormous LA win can get in the game on October 4th for the next USA Mega Millions draw – as the jackpot resets to $12 million.
