The USA Powerball jackpot has been climbing to astronomical heights in recent weeks following the changes made to the lottery in the middle of the month.
Now, the top prize for this popular game is $170 million thanks to no fewer than ten draws leading to the payout increasing.
Powerball now offers bigger prizes, with all jackpots starting at $40 million rather than $20 million, while every unclaimed top prize will then have another $10 million added to it for the next draw.
The second-tier prize has also been boosted, as this payout is now a cool $1 million, as opposed to the old sum of $200,000, if a player gets all five main numbers correct on their lottery ticket.
This means matching the five main numbers with a Power Play sees the potential winnings inflate to $2 million – presenting the opportunity for dozens of millionaires with ever draw.
Indeed, some US states have announced the happy news that their regions have seen their first $1 million winners under the new system, with Indiana’s media announcing one lucky fan became a millionaire after getting five numbers correct on Wednesday (January 25th).
Furthermore, the Arizona Lottery announced it has seen its first $2 million and $1 million prizes claimed.
“This is an exciting win for the Arizona Lottery because this was only the second $2 Powerball draw since the [revamped] game launched on January 15th and Arizona’s first $1 million second prize winner,” assistant director of budget, products and communications at the organisation Karen Bach stated.
She added that many people may be happily unaware of the changes to USA Powerball and so might not realise how much their lottery ticket is worth if their fortunes have come in, so she reminded all players to check their entries very carefully when the results come in.
But, aside from the chance to win $1 million and $2 million, most players will have the top prize in their sights when they play USA Powerball and Wednesday’s (February 1st) draw is promising $170 million to the lucky fan who gets all their numbers right.
As well as becoming fabulously wealthy, the winner – whoever he or she may be – will also be the first to take home a jackpot in 2012, because the jumbo payout has not been claimed since Christmas Eve.

Here we go again, bragging about my lottery expertise, wisom and winnings 
Last night I placed my biggest spread on a range of USA state lotteries. I had one of those moments when a feeling in my gut made me change some last minute decisions and place the lions share of my investment on one lottery. I chose the Arizona lottery, one of the biggest in the USA but for me, traditionally one of the worst. Over the last year i’ve played it less and less since they seem to just accept my cash and never reward me for my dedication and devotion
Anyhow, last night I had that feeling and spread $100 accross a few game cards…. somehow I knew something would happen, and sure enough it did. I was out with my wife enjoying a quick snack at Wendy’s (sorry, but I just love their pancakes maple, I also love the fact that their tv is always showing lottery numbers coming in) Sure enough I had to contain my ecstasy and be careful not to choke on pancake number 6 when 5 numbers came rolling in. I netted $75,000 !!! will it change my life? probably not, but a nice holiday for the family has been booked and my overdraft paid off…
