Lotto hype was at its zenith in the run-up to the December holiday season and now 2012 is well under way, fans may be left wondering just who won the EuroMillions at Christmas.
It seems lady lucky was smiling down on the little town of Grange-over-SandsinCumbriathis yuletide, as a family from the northernUKcounty realised they were millionaires on the big day itself.
Karen Shaw and her husband Anthony had entered the EuroMillions on the Friday (December 23rd) before Christmas, but left their lottery tickets under the tree to check while opening their presents with their children.
The couple – who have two grown-up children, Sara and Karl – forgot to look at their numbers on Christmas morning and did not inspect them until later that afternoon, which is when they realised they had landed a €1.2 million fortune.
Mrs Shaw said: “We eventually all sat down around 16:00 GMT on Christmas Day to open the presents and I remembered the tickets. I had put them in an envelope under the tree.”
“Karl was looking at numbers on his phone and suddenly said, ‘You had better check it – I think it’s a winner’.”
The mum-of-two manages a sheltered housing scheme and admitted she had only bought the EuroMillions tickets on a whim.
And the family have not wasted any time when it comes to how they will spend their newfound wealth.
One of the first things they will use the cash for is helping their children get out of the family home and onto the property ladder, as Mrs Shaw says she would like to have less mess to clear up.
Then once their son and daughter are sorted out, the Shaws have decided they would like to take a luxury cruise toAlaska, as well as treat the rest of the family and ensure all their loved ones are financially secure.
