After weeks of waiting in anticipation – during which time countless lotto fans must have been frantically checking their own lottery tickets – the winner of the coveted $206 million USA Mega Millions jackpot has come forward.
The now fantastically wealthy player has so far elected to remain anonymous and only made an appearance at the New York State Lottery headquarters this week, despite the drawing for this enormous top prize taking place on December 27th.
Very little is known about the man or woman who bought the ticket, except for the fact that they live inLong Islandand are now the richest-ever lotto winner to come from that part of the state.
According to New York State Lottery officials, the slip was purchased at a supermarket in the Middle Island area and the numbers were chosen by a Quick Pick random number selector.
Because the winner had taken so long to make themselves known to officials, it was rumoured the lucky lotto fan was in fact an employee of the store in question.
If the lottery player chooses to take his or her payout as a cash lump sum, the amount they receive will be worth $153 million.
It is not known whether they kept their momentous USA Mega Millions win under their hat because they wanted to get used to the idea of owning such an enormous sum of money and contact the necessary financial and legal experts to advise them on the best steps to take, or if it was merely the case that they did not check their lottery ticket until recently.
Last week, the media was rife with reports about the mystery lottery winner who was yet to make themselves known – coverage that may have encouraged the player to take a peek at any slips they had forgotten to check.
The USA Mega Millions jackpot has been rolling over since the exciting December 27th draw, with four unclaimed top prizes seeing the payout climb to dizzying heights once again.
Its jackpot is now $42 million and lottery fans can enter their lucky numbers or Quick Pick selection in time for tomorrow’s (January 13th) draw.
