The fortunate lotto fans – who have opted to remain anonymous – are from the city of Christchurch on theSouth Island and have revealed when they realised they had landed themselves a tidy sum for the new year they had to uncork a very special wine they had been saving for a big occasion such as this.
One of the couple revealed they had been given an expensive bottle of champagne from a friend and because of its high quality, they had always said they would save it for a big wedding anniversary or a lottery win.
“I can’t believe that we actuality opened it for the lotto rather than an anniversary,” she laughed.
Her partner had no idea about the good news until he got home that night to find the special bottle open on the kitchen table, at which point his wife handed him a piece of paper revealing the life-changing event.
The family have been playing New Zealand Powerball since the beginning and have a select few number sequenced they use when entering a draw, but in this instance, they decided to try their luck with a Quick Pick random number selection – a chance that turned out to be for the best.
Despite having a few weeks to mull over the fact they are now millionaires, the winners still say it is like living in a dream.
To make sure they are being sensible with their finances, they have opted to lock their cash away for a few months while they decide how best to spend their winnings.
Some plans have already been made, however, with regards dividing their newfound wealth and the winners hope to pay off their mortgage and buy a new car for the family with the money.
However, ensuring loved ones are all looked after is the most important thing for this clan of New Zealand Powerball fans.
“Helping out our family is also high on the priority list,” they stated.
The next New Zealand Powerball draw is scheduled for Saturday with an estimated NZ$8 million up for grabs.
