Hot numbers
Hot numbers are numbers that are called frequently in a series of lottery draws. Depending on different systems, to qualify as a hot number, the digit in question has to have been called a certain number of times – say three to five – within the last ten or 20 draws.
Strangely, there are some numbers that are called more often than others across the whole gamut of lotteries around the world, with the number eight proving to be the most likely to appear in a sequence of winning digits.
This is especially spooky, as the number eight is considered fortunate in Chinese culture, because it is associated with prosperity and wealth partly because in regional dialects they sound the same.
Cold numbers
By contrast, cold numbers are the digits that have not been called in a long time. Some fans include these in the sequence they choose when buying their lottery ticket because statistically they are due to make an appearance soon.
Just like the number eight, there are some balls that very rarely get plucked from the drum in a lottery draw, with 20 making the fewest appearances across the board, which is why it is one of the coldest numbers out there.
Why fans play with hot and cold numbers
Lottery enthusiasts who take their game very seriously sometimes keep a tally of what numbers are drawn and which have not appeared in a while and use this information in a strategy they believe will result in lotto success.
The theory is that by picking some hot numbers that often make an appearance in a draw and including some cold numbers that are long overdue to be called, they will have a good chance of claiming a top lotto prize.
