Lotto fans may find themselves scratching their heads for great lengths of time as they grapple with which numbers to pick when playing their favourite lottery draws – but do they know that lucky dips can save them from the anxiety of picking digits from addresses and birth dates?

Lucky dips are random number selectors that choose the numbers a lottery player will use in a particular draw for them.

Also known as a quick pick, lotto fans utilise computer programs to select a range of numbers to be played, so they are leaving the sequence they use entirely up to fate.

There are lots of random number generator sites available on the internet and some lottery enthusiasts may prefer them to using numbers they are familiar with.

Academic statistician and Winton professor of the public understanding of risk at Cambridge University David Spiegelhalter has suggested that using lucky dips can be a good choice for lotto players who want to vary their number selection.

“The real problem with always choosing the same number pattern is that it is difficult to ever stop, given the regret you would feel if that combination subsequently came up,” he explained.
