Quilting retreat ‘results in $200,000 USA Powerball win for group’ – November 22nd 2011

A group of 23 women enjoying a quilting retreat near Salem, Massachusetts, are celebrating after their getaway resulted in them winning $200,000 playing USA Powerball.

According to the Register Guard, the ladies – most of whom come from Eugene in Oregon, will be splitting their prize money, resulting in them getting around $5,000 apiece, with the gang using the cash to help fund future breaks together at the Silver Falls Conference Center to enjoy their pastime.

It transpires they pooled their money and bought 26 lines for the October 29th USA Powerball game – which had a $200 million jackpot.

The ladies also entered the lotto for their friends who were not in attendance and bought tickets for the draw while doing a fabric run.

Over the next couple of days, the group did what all lottery fans do – fantasize about how they would spend a top prize – before checking the newspaper and realising their luck had come in, even if it was not a jackpot win.

As a result of the good fortune, the women have been dubbed the Getaway Girls.

Adonna Roelke, who works at the Springfied-based PacificSource health insurance company and organises the quilting breaks, stated: “It’s just hard to believe. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. For the next few years, we’ll be getting a free Sunday brunch [at the retreat].”
