Bletchley Park wins £4.6 million in lotto funding – October 6th 2011

The heart of World War II codebreaking, Bletchley Park, is to be given £4.6 million in lotto financing from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

As a result of this investment, new exhibitions and interactive displays are going to be set up to bring the story of the Buckinghamshire site alive.

Some lottery fans may remember that Bletchley Park and its incredible story was immortalised in the book Enigma by Robert Harris, which was subsequently turned into a film starring Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott.

Chief executive of the HLF Carole Souter said: “I cannot think of a better use of Heritage Lottery Fund money than to support this project and, in so doing, honour the memory of all who were involved.”

Bletchley Park was home to the Government Code and Cypher School and played a pivotal role in decoding the enigma machines retrieved from Nazi U-boats during WWII.

This week, HLF announced it would be giving £340,000 in lotto financing to the UK’s Bumblebee Conservation Trust to conserve a variety of endangered species of the insect.
