Lottery money sunk into hospitals and schools – June 27th 2011

Charities, hospitals, schools, culture and amateur sports associations in the province of Ontario have benefited from Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) cash this year.

The organisation has provided over $2 billion to such groups, with chair of the board of directors Paul Godfrey saying that the local people “can be proud of these results”.

“This level of contribution is unique among provincial agencies, boards and commissions,” he went on to note.

It represents a rise of $193 million – or over ten per cent – on the last financial year and is the highest amount contributed since 2003.

Rod Phillips, chief executive officer and president of the lottery agency, added that the OLG has agreed to help the government find $100 million in savings for Ontario by 2014.

Between April 2008 and 2009, the lotto company also sponsored local music and community events, providing $1.4 million in cash and gave hospitals and other health-related services $1.8 billion.
