Speaking to Iol, Thembi Tulwana – spokeswoman for National Lottery Gidani, based in South Africa – explained that the operator’s counsellors actually keep in touch with anyone who hits the big time for seven years after their win, giving them both financial and emotional advice.

“The counsellors look at the winner’s lifestyle, their family dynamics, investments and come up with a clear and understandable path of action for investment,” she remarked.

Johannesburg-based psychologist Wendy Hay added that emotional spending must be “considered and responsible” and delaying gratification after winning lots of lotto money will help people be financially successful.
