Lotto Fund Worth £66 Million Earmarked for Paralympics – July 20th, 2012
The London 2012 Olympic Games may be only eight days away, but there is still more than one month to go until the Paralympic Games, which follows on after the initial tournament is over.
Just like the Olympics, the UK National Lottery has played a big part in organising the funding for the Paralympics, ensuring this sporting event runs smoothly with the correct equipment and facilities available for its athletes.
Those who play UK National Lottery and UK EuroMillions lotto online games or buy lottery tickets for these draws have contributed to the organisation and setting up of the London 2012 Games and a total £2.2 billion has been raised by British lotto organisation Camelot to support the event.
Of this enormous kitty, £66 million has been set aside specifically for the Paralympic Games.
This grant was agreed by the Olympic Delivery Authority in October 2011 and represents nearly one-third of the entire budget for the Paralympics – which is a big part of the London 2012 Games.
In addition, the UK National Lottery is playing a pivotal role in funding work that will lead to increased participation in sport at a community and grassroots level and deliver improved community services and facilities when the Games are over.
The UK National Lottery has been supporting athletes for a lot longer than some may think, with the organisation providing essential finances for sportsmen and women since 1997, enabling them to take their training and event participation full-time.
1,200 athletes currently receive National Lottery funding, while 438 Olympic and Paralympic medals have been won by athletes who have needed lotto backing to allow them to work on their skills to international standards.
As a thank you to lotto fans whose UK National Lottery and UK EuroMillions lottery ticket purchases have contributed to this vital athletics funding, the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle on Olympic opening night (July 27th) will make 100 overnight millionaires – the biggest lotto event of its kind.
Director of performance at UK Sport – which helps allocate lotto funding to athletes – said: “National Lottery funding continues to make a life-changing difference at all levels of sport, giving everyone the chance to fulfil their potential. No one has contributed more to our athletes than National Lottery players.”
