ABOUT EUROPE - EUROMILLIONS

In 2011, Europe's EuroMillions lotto broke the record for the largest jackpot in the continent’s history. EuroMillions was launched in 2004, and nine different European countries participate in the lottery’s multi-national jackpots. Many more players access EuroMillions as an online lotto, and the pan-European lottery frequently has one of the world's biggest lotto jackpots featured on theBig.

EuroMillions History

The EuroMillions was created in 2004 by three major national lottery organizations in France, Spain and the UK. Eventually the Austrian, Belgian, Irish, Luxembourg, Portuguese and Swiss lotteries joined the multi-country lottery to create the EuroMillions as it is known today. The largest jackpots include: €183 million both in February and November of 2006, €185 million in July of 2011 and €190 million in August of 2012.

EuroMillions Rules

Players at theLotter.com interested in the EuroMillions lottery jackpot can play by selecting 5 numbers from a pool of 50, as well as two additional numbers called the “Lucky Stars”, which are chosen from a different pool of 11 numbers. The additional number allows lottery players to win supplementary prizes and is essential to complete the jackpot winning numbers selection. Players may pick their numbers manually, can use their preselected numbers (My Lucky Numbers) or can have the numbers randomly chosen (Quick Pick). theLotter.com offers a systematic form of 6, 7, 8 or 10 numbers which produces all possible entry combinations of the selected numbers. Additionally, players can ensure they are entered into all lotteries as well as receive exclusive discounts draws with a Subscription or with a Multi-Draw.

Twice a year, EuroMillions offers players the option of entering the EuroMillion’s Super Draw. In the Super Draw, the jackpot starts at €100 million and grows until the jackpot is won. Until now, the Super Draw’s first jackpot has never been claimed and a set of rollovers has always ensued.

Online lotto ticket purchases close three hours prior to the drawings which occur every Tuesday and Friday evening, at 20:00 GMT. EuroMillions results are available on theLotter.com at approximately 22:00 GMT every Tuesday and Friday. For lottery results from around the world click here.

Winning the EuroMillions

There are 13 impressive EuroMillions categories, and to win the jackpot, players must correctly guess five regular numbers as well as the two ‘Lucky Star’ numbers. Part of the excitement of EuroMillions is that the amount that can be won for each division is not set to a standard amount. The Euromillions’ jackpot starts from €15 million and keeps getting bigger with each rollover until a pre-determined jackpot cap. Once the lottery reaches the jackpot cap, now €195 million, it can roll over one more time (one additional week) and if it is not won, the funds are distributed down to the secondary prize divisions. Jackpot winners have three months to claim their prize, which can only be received as a lump sum (a one-time payment).

As of 1st January 2013, Spanish lottery prizes that exceed €2,500 will be subject to a government legislated tax at a rate of 20%. This also applies to Spanish wins in EuroMillions.

EuroMillions Anecdotes

The Luck of the Irish - In July of 2005 an Irish barmaid, Dolores McNamara, was named the largest single winner of any European Lottery to date when she took home the EuroMillions jackpot of €115m after a NINE TIME ROLLOVER!

Mummy Dearest - The €101 million winners Dave Dawes and fiancée Angela, in October of 2011, quickly used up their money, but not in the usual way. Typically big winners spend their cash in luxury cars, houses and the like, but this couple decided to spend their money almost entirely on their family. Since the couples’ win, news articles have frequently popped up with them giving more and more money to needy family members, especially Dave’s mother.

If you enjoy EuroMillions you may also enjoy Italy's SuperEnalotto, another popular European lottery.

EUROMILLIONS €62 MILLION JACKPOT

Tuesday night saw no jackpot winners in the €50 million EuroMillions lottery draw, making the top prize for Friday's draw worth at least €62 million, a €12 million jump that follows one of €8 million. There were three second place prize winners who matched five regular balls and one of the two lucky stars, with each ticket worth €394.615!

In the Friday night draw held on May 10th, there were no winners of the EuroMillions second place prize; something that hasn't happened since 22nd June 2012! This prize has been known to make non-jackpot winning millionaires, as happened in Tuesday drawings on 30th April and 26th March 2013, where the winners took home entire second prize funds of €1,007,619 ($1,317,000) and €1,007,262 ($1,295,000) respectively for matching 5+1 Lucky Star.

The most recent EuroMillions jackpot win was worth €32.5 million, and was won by a single ticket holder in Portugal on April 26th. The country's fourth top prize winner in 2013, its impressive run of form further solidifies third place with 48 EuroMillions winners total, only five behind Spain, which has 53 jackpot winners in Europe's premier lottery.

The biggest EuroMillions jackpot in 2013 was worth €130 million, as a result of March's €100 million Superdraw rolling over twice before being claimed by one lucky French ticket holder. France leads the pack in 2013 and overall, with six jackpot winners this year, and 65 since EuroMillions began!
